Golden Triangle: of opiums, tourism, and convergence

Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, separated by rivers Ruak (Myanmar and Thailand) and Mekong River (Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos), meet at the famous Golden Triangle; where you can be in three places at once.

Tours are available for one to try navigating the Ruak and Mekong River or for a three-day cruise going up to China through Mekong. Smaller tugboats have a hard time going upstream so I'm pretty sure it's not advisable.

Left is Ruak River and Mekong River. The island between these rivers is Tachileik.
The Northernmost Thailand border  marking the line between the two countries (Mae Sai, Thailand and Tachileik, Myanmar) is likewise the confluence of Ruak and Mae Sai River

Mid 2000s, Chiang Saen, where the Golden Triangle is located, was a simple landmark infamously known as a thoroughfare for opium and heroine trade, Golden Triangle made it into our history books for  illegal trade caused by the mere fact that its location made ingress and egress of opium to and from the mountains of Myanmar, far more accessible. Hippies rejoiced. Watch out for my blog on the thoroughfare of opium and heroin trade.

The monument at the left was built in the late 2000s, the only marker before this was the triangle depicting Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos.
As there was a rapid increase of tourists in the ASEAN region; in the same way, Thailand jacked up its tourism through enhancing its would-be go-to places; refining landmarks and monuments, adorning commonplace features;  and turning Golden Triangle into a spectacle, a must-see tourist spot.

This is a new attraction at Golden Triangle, the dragon boat is a fixed ship at the Thailand side catering to tourists for trinkets and food choices

When this monument was first built tourists can easily come up to the top to have their pictures taken; since the influx of tourists, an ample charge was imposed.

Likewise, the push for the ASEAN Economic Community 2015 has boosted the tourism industry in Thailand, among others. The AEC is also a welcome development for the nation states in the region; particularly, Myanmar (which have only recently chaired ASEAN 2014 and Thailand).

The AEC.

Philippines, represeeeent!
